Human Society and it's Environment

The Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE) faculty plays a pivotal role in shaping students' understanding of the world around them. By integrating history and social sciences, we provide students with the tools to critically examine societal structures, cultural developments, and historical events. This interdisciplinary approach challenges students to think deeply about the past and present, fostering their ability to analyse complex issues, engage in informed discussions, and develop a sense of civic responsibility. Through inquiry-based learning, students are encouraged to question, explore, and reflect, preparing them to become thoughtful and active citizens in an ever-changing global landscape.

Year 7-10 History
In Stage 4 & 5 History, students explore significant events, people, and societies from various perspectives. They learn about ancient civilisations, the development of Australia, and the impact of key historical events on contemporary society. Through research, critical analysis, and the examination of primary and secondary sources, students develop skills in historical inquiry and interpretation.

Year 7-10 Geography
Stage 4 & 5 Geography equips students with a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between people and their environments. Students investigate physical and human geography, exploring topics such as ecosystems, urbanisation, and global interconnections. They learn to analyse spatial data and use geographical tools, fostering an appreciation for sustainability and the need for responsible environmental stewardship.

Year 9-10 Commerce
In Stage 5 Commerce, students gain insights into the world of business and economics. The course covers topics such as consumer rights, financial literacy, and the role of government in the economy. Additionally, students learn about the legal system and its impact on commerce, equipping them with knowledge on how to navigate legal responsibilities and rights as consumers. Through practical activities and case studies, students develop a foundational understanding of how businesses operate and the factors influencing economic decision-making.

Year 9-10 Elective History
Stage 5 Elective History allows students to delve deeper into specific historical themes and periods of interest. This course encourages independent research and critical thinking as students explore topics such as social movements, war, and the evolution of Australian society. The elective nature of the course fosters a passion for history and enhances students' analytical skills.

Stage 6 Courses

Ancient History
In Ancient History, students investigate the societies of the ancient world, focusing on key civilisations such as Egypt, Greece, and Rome. They analyse archaeological evidence and historical texts, gaining insights into the cultural, political, and social dynamics of these civilisations. This course promotes an understanding of the foundations of modern societies and the enduring legacies of the past.

Business Studies
Business Studies provides students with a comprehensive overview of the business environment. Students explore core concepts such as marketing, finance, and human resources, and analyse real-world business scenarios. This course equips students with practical skills and knowledge applicable to future business endeavours and entrepreneurial pursuits.

Economics
Economics, students analyse the principles governing economic behaviour and the functioning of markets. They study topics such as demand and supply, inflation, and international trade, allowing them to understand economic issues that affect individuals and societies. This course fosters critical thinking and informed decision-making regarding economic policies and practices.

Geography
Geography expands on students’ understanding of the interconnectedness of people and places. Students study contemporary geographical issues, including environmental sustainability, population dynamics, and globalisation. Through fieldwork and research projects, they develop geographical skills that enable them to address real-world challenges.

Legal Studies
Legal Studies, students explore the Australian legal system, its principles, and its impact on society. The course covers topics such as criminal law, civil law, and human rights, promoting an understanding of the role of law in maintaining social order and justice. Students engage in critical analysis of legal cases and contemporary legal issues, preparing them for informed citizenship.

Modern History
Modern History focuses on key events and movements that have shaped the modern world. Students analyse significant historical developments from the late 19th century to the present, including wars, revolutions, and social change. This course encourages students to draw connections between past and present, enhancing their understanding of current global issues.

Society & Culture
Society & Culture, students examine the complexities of social structures, cultural identity, and human experience. They explore themes such as globalisation, social change, and cultural representation. Through research and analysis, students develop a nuanced understanding of the diverse factors that influence societies and cultures, fostering empathy and global awareness.
