PDHPE

The PDHPE (Personal Development, Health and Physical Education) Faculty consists of a mix of experienced and youthful passionate and driven teachers aiming to deliver quality teaching across all years at Woolooware High School. We aim to develop skills and qualities in our students that will enable them to become 21st century learners, lifelong participants in physical activity and to be able to live healthy and productive lives.

We endeavour to embed technology, literacy and numeracy skills and higher order thinking in our theory and practical programs to ensure quality teaching and learning. We don’t forget that our lessons need to be interesting and fun and attempt to ensure that we engage all students.

Years 7-10 PDHPE is a mandatory subject.

In the 2 week cycle there are 5 periods for Years 7-9 and 4 periods for Year 10. There is a variation of Physical Education practical lessons and Theory lessons. This varies throughout the year. The students get to use a variety of the facilities available including the Multi Purpose Hall, Canteen, Basketball Courts, Quad and our expansive playing fields.

In PDHPE we cater for all of the students. We are renowned at WHS for our excellence in sport but PDHPE attempts to engage all of our students, regardless of ability or interest. The faculty provides a large variety of activities attempting to develop skills, knowledge and attitudes that will lead to lifelong healthy decisions.

In the PDHPE Faculty we offer the following elective subjects

Yr 9 and 10 – Physical Activity and Sports Studies.

This is a popular course in Year 9 and 10 and traditionally we run 2 classes. The aim of the course is to extend the students from the PDHPE course and emphasise the physical side of the course. The theory work is closely related to the practical classes.

Highlights of this course (at least those that are selected by the students) include the Year 9 skiing excursion, Year 10 camp, Surf Survival, circus skills, golf and running the Year 7 Gala day.

Yr 11 and 12 - 2 unit PDHPE

This course is popular amongst the state cohort and at WHS we consistently have 2 classes complete the HSC. It is selected by a large variety of students and is particularly interesting for those students that have an interest in a social view of health with emphasis on social justice, supportive environments and fundamental aspects of health. It also includes a detailed study of movement and physical activity.

Whilst this is an academically rigorous course that covers a breadth of factors, there are plenty of enjoyable times including the Year 11 Outdoor Recreation Camp, the first aid course and the learning and/or teaching of physical skills like juggling.
